Lupine is out all over right now, but nowhere have I seen such a patch as the one growing on the southwest side of Randolph Hill, just down from the remaining supports for the old peace sign.

To view it, take either the ridge trail up from the Waterworks Hill trailhead or the switchbacks and Fireline Trail up from the trailhead at the north end of Orange Street. Once you’re on the level part of the ridge, look for the field of blue between the fenceline and the top of the hill to the northwest.

The flowers are so dense you can even see them from the valley floor; looking north from downtown, find the blue-gray swath below and to the right of the top of the hill.

As tempting as it may be to get a close-up view, remember that the caretakers of Waterworks Hill would prefer hikers remain on the stone-lined path.

I need help with pronunciation. (Embarrassed).

Is lupine pronounced Loo-pin, or Loo-pine? I’ve heard it both ways. So is it like “creek” and “crick,” interchangable?

Webster’s says “loo-pin.” Both “creek” and “crick” are listed pronunciations. Most people don’t break out the dictionary, though.

Because nobody cares what the dictionary says. We want to be able to talk like the locals. : )
